Install solar systems that keep working. Solar PV installation training in Yaoundé

A three-month, hands-on course for people who already know basic electricity: size, install, commission and maintain off-grid and hybrid solar systems. On campus in Melen, three sessions a week, with a site visit every two weeks.

In partnership with SmartSana Energies

The course is run with SmartSana Energies, our partner in renewable energy. The classroom is our campus in Melen; the site visits take you to working solar installations, so what you learn on Tuesday you see on a roof that Saturday. solar.smartsana.com

Who it is for

Electricians who want to add solar to what they sell, electrical and electronics technicians, and students or graduates in electrical engineering who want a trade they can start working in straight away. Solar is installed on homes, shops, schools, clinics and farms across the country, and an installer who sizes a system properly gets called back.

You leave able to size, install, commission and maintain off-grid and hybrid solar systems for homes and small businesses, and to price the job.

You need the basics of electricity

This is not a course for complete beginners. Before you register, check that:

  • you can explain voltage, current, resistance and power, and use P = U × I;
  • you have wired a lighting or socket circuit, at home, at school or at work;
  • you can measure voltage, current and continuity with a multimeter.

Two groups, the same course

Three sessions of three hours a week, on campus, for twelve weeks. Choose the group that fits your days; the content, the trainers and the site visits are the same.

Twelve weeks, week by week

Every week mixes the classroom with hands-on work on real components. Each week builds on the one before, and the site visit at the end of every second week shows the same thing working on a real installation.

110 NovSafety first, and DC done properlyWhy a DC arc does not go out on its own, isolation and lock-out, protective equipment. Measure the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current of a module with a multimeter and a clamp meter.
216 NovReading a site: the load audit Site visitList every appliance, its power and its hours of use, and turn the list into a daily energy need in watt-hours. On the first site visit, check the roof, the shade and the cable runs.
323 NovSolar modules and stringsRead a module datasheet (Voc, Isc, Vmp, Imp, the effect of heat), wire modules in series and in parallel, and predict the voltage and current before you measure them.
430 NovBatteries and storage Site visitLead-acid and lithium (LiFePO4) side by side: capacity, depth of discharge, cycle life and the battery management system. Handle and connect a battery bank safely.
57 DecCharge controllers and invertersPWM against MPPT, off-grid inverters and inverter-chargers. Set one up, then read and explain what it reports.
614 DecSizing an off-grid system Site visitFrom the week 2 audit to a full design: array, battery bank, controller, inverter, cable sections and voltage drop. Each learner sizes a real home or shop.

111 FebMaintenance, faults and quoting a jobA maintenance routine, finding faults methodically, and pricing a job: materials, labour, margin, and a quote a client can understand.
128 FebFinal project and practical assessment Site visitPresent your design for a real client brief, then commission a system against the checklist, observed by the trainers, on the last site visit.

A site visit every two weeks

Six Saturday mornings on working installations: a survey before the design, a battery room, an installation in progress, a hybrid system on the grid, a commissioning, and your own practical assessment on the last one. You see the decisions a real job forces, and you ask the installer why.

On site, safety rules. Closed shoes and long trousers on every visit. You work under the instructions of the person in charge of the site, and nobody goes onto a roof without the supervisor’s say-so.

What it costs

The same price as one level of our other programmes, and no exam fee: the course ends in our own practical assessment, not a vendor exam.

Questions people ask

Can I do this while working full time?

Yes: that is what the evening group is for. Three evenings a week on campus, and a Saturday morning site visit every two weeks in place of that week’s Friday.

I have never studied electricity. Can I join?

Not this session. The course starts from DC safety and sizing, not from what a volt is, and a group that has to wait for one person learns less. Call us and we will tell you honestly how to get the basics first.

Can I change group after I register?

Tell us as early as you can. A change depends on room in the other group.

Is this a recognised diploma?

No. You receive a SmartSana Academy certificate of completion, which is not a State diploma, a CQP or an electrical licence. What makes you employable is what you can show: systems you have sized, a commissioning you have carried out, and the installers who saw you do it.
